The Importance of Net Zero
As net zero emissions , we must balance what we collect from the environment with the greenhouse gases we release into the atmosphere. To prevent the adverse effects of climate change, 197 nations agreed to limit temperature increases "well below" 1.5°C under the Paris Agreement in 2015. In their assessment from 2018, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded that "global net human-caused carbon dioxide emissions would need to decline by around 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2030, reaching net zero around 2050. Removing CO2 from the atmosphere will be required to offset any remaining human-caused emissions that cannot be reduced. The quality of the net zero targets differ among organizations.
